Recognizing a conflict of interest is an important part of maintaining professional judgment and keeping patients’ interests at the forefront. Conflicts may be actual, potential, or perceived and can arise in a range of practice situations, including referrals, business arrangements, financial interests, dual roles, product sales, and prescribing or dispensing.
This Regulatory Education Program (REP) session will help you build confidence in recognizing and navigating conflict-of-interest situations in practice. Drawing on the College’s Standard of Practice: Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Interest Guideline, along with practical case examples, we’ll explore how to identify potential risks, apply regulatory expectations, and take appropriate steps to disclose, document, and manage conflicts.
Key takeaways:
- recognize circumstances that may give rise to a conflict of interest
- assess conflict-of-interest situations using applicable College standards and guidance
- determine appropriate actions to manage conflicts while protecting patient interests and maintaining professional integrity
