From collecting specimens to ordering laboratory tests, naturopaths engage in activities that are closely regulated and subject to specific requirements. This Regulatory Education Program (REP) session will provide a comprehensive overview of the regulatory framework governing the collection of specimens, the performance of authorized in-office tests, and the requisitioning of laboratory tests. Information will focus on the scope of practice outlined in the Naturopathy Act, 2007, the General Regulation, and the Laboratory and Specimen Collection Centre Licensing Act (LSCCLA), including the obligations, limitations, and compliance expectations that apply to naturopaths.

Participants will gain guidance on regulatory compliance, professional responsibilities when requisition lab tests, and adherence to the College’s standards of practice, including documentation, fees and billing, and patient safety considerations related to laboratory testing activities.

PRESENTERS

Dr. Kim Bretz
Naturopathic Doctor

Dr. Kim Bretz ND is a naturopathic doctor working and living in Waterloo Region. Kim is a speaker, consultant and adjunct faculty at the University of Waterloo, Pharmacy. She is a passionate international public speaker, having presented to multiple corporations and agencies, and is a guest lecturer for Canadian universities in the areas of health promotion, function foods, and natural health care products. She also runs continuing education for healthcare professionals in the area of the microbiota, strain specific probiotics, and gastrointestinal health. For 6 years, Kim was part of Human Nature Network, a nationally syndicated radio program though CHUM radio, speaking in the areas of women’s health. She is an ardent supporter of education and interprofessionalism. Kim taught gastrointestinal physiology and endocrinology at the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy. She teaches a course in Complementary and Alternative Medicine focusing on Interprofessionalism at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo and has worked with the PIPER program out of McMaster (Program for Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research). She has also been involved in the role of clinical lead in a research trial through the University of Guelph with the Spagnuolo Research Lab.

Jeremy Quesnelle
Deputy CEO, Regulations

Jeremy Quesnelle is the Deputy CEO, Regulations of the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. Jeremy began his work with the College in 2011, 4 years prior to the proclamation of the Naturopathy Act, 2007. During that time Jeremy’s focus was on regulation, standard, policy, and program development in the areas of Quality Assurance, Complaint, Discipline, Inspections, Patient Relations, and Controlled Acts.

Since proclamation in 2015, Jeremy has overseen the College’s professional practice and professional conduct departments as well as supporting the CEO in the day-to-day operations and governance of the College.
