Understanding Ontario’s Complex Mandatory Reporting Requirements

Mandatory reporting is one of the ways in which the College achieves its mandate of protecting the public. As a naturopath, you had a legal obligation under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 to report certain information to the College so that any incidents of possible professional misconduct, incompetence, or incapacity on the part of its registrants could be appropriately investigated and addressed.

In this session, we reviewed the intricacies of Ontario’s mandatory reporting requirements for health professionals, particularly NDs. These requirements included sensitive issues related to child abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, findings of guilt, negligence, malpractice, and incapacity, as well as reportable and communicable diseases and breaches of patient privacy. By the end of the session, you were expected to be able to understand what had to be reported and to whom, through the various legislative structures in Ontario.
