Substitute Decision Making

This Regulatory Education Program (REP) session focused on substitute decision making in naturopathic practice in Ontario, with an in-depth look at the legal and ethical frameworks that govern informed consent and health information. The session covered key legislation, including the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA), the Health Care Consent Act, 1996 (HCCA), and the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA).
Presenters provided clarification on the roles and responsibilities of naturopathic doctors and substitute decision-makers, outlined how to meet informed consent obligations, and offered practical guidance on handling complex care situations in accordance with professional and legislative standards to support registrants in delivering ethical, patient-centered care.

Dr. Kathy Van Zeyl
Naturopathic Doctor
Dr. Kathy Van Zeyl, ND is a graduate of Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and has been practicing the profession since 2009. She has a private practice in Ottawa where she has a special focus on Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. In addition to her work on the Regulatory Education Program, Kathy is also a member of the College’s Standards Committee.

Manager, Quality Assurance and Inspection
Dr. Mary‐Ellen McKenna, ND (Retired) serves as the College’s Manager, Quality Assurance and Inspection. She provides guidance to registrants, stakeholders and the public on the regulations and standards of the profession and oversees the Quality Assurance and Inspection Program areas. Prior to working with the College, Mary‐Ellen served on the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy and the Transitional Council of the College of Naturopaths of Ontario.
