Transition to the CANRA Qualifying Examinations

On April 1, 2027, the College of Naturopaths of Ontario will transition to the Canadian Alliance of Naturopathic Regulatory Authorities Qualifying Examinations (CANRA-QE) for entry-to-practise in Ontario.

This transition will support a consistent national approach to assessing naturopathic competencies. It will also reduce duplicate examination requirements for applicants seeking registration in more than one jurisdiction and support a more streamlined and standardized entry-to-practise process.

About the exam transition

Beginning April 1, 2027, the College will no longer administer the following examinations:

  • Ontario Clinical (Practical) Examinations
  • Ontario Clinical Sciences Examination
  • Ontario Biomedical Examination

All applicants, except those who meet the labour mobility requirements, must successfully complete the CANRA-QE as set or approved by the Council to qualify for registration with the College.

The College will continue to determine examination eligibility, set the permitted number of attempts, conduct remediation reviews, and review accommodation requests.

About the CANRA-QE

The CANRA-QE is a suite of examinations made up of complementary components that, together, assess the full National Competency Profile for entry-level Naturopathic practise in Canada. It assesses the competencies a Naturopathic Doctor must demonstrate to practise safely and effectively at the point of entry into the profession.

CANRA will administer the exam and provide information about examination dates, registration, and delivery.

What candidates need to know

To support candidates in the process of completing the entry-to-practise examination requirements for registration, the College will offer Winter 2027 sessions of the Ontario Clinical (Practical) Examinations, Ontario Clinical Sciences Examination, and Ontario Biomedical Examination. Exam dates will be announced in late October 2026 and posted on the College website on each examination’s Fees & Schedule page.

Candidates can also register for the October 25, 2026, Clinical (Practical) Examinations beginning August 27, 2026.

Passing examination results

Passing College examination results will remain valid for two years.

Candidates who have passed some, but not all, of the required examinations by April 1, 2027, will only need to complete the corresponding CANRA-QE that remains outstanding. Their passing College examination results must still be valid.

The Ontario Clinical (Practical) Examinations are considered successfully completed only when a candidate has a passing score on all three of the component examinations.

Unsuccessful prior examination attempts

Unsuccessful attempts at College examinations will not count as CANRA-QE attempts.

Candidates who have two unsuccessful attempts at any College clinical or registration examination when the transition takes effect must undergo a review by the Registration Committee. They must complete any remediation required by the Committee before they are eligible to take the CANRA-QE.

Candidates with three unsuccessful attempts must meet additional requirements under the Registration Regulation before becoming eligible to take the CANRA-QE.

Exam accommodations

Candidates who received an accommodation for a College examination must submit a new accommodation request and supporting documents to the College.

Review the College’s Exam Transition Policy for additional details.
