Disease, Disorder, Dysfunctions Consultation (deadline March 15, 2022)

Background

The Council of the College of Naturopaths of Ontario has tasked the Schedule Substances Review Committee with the project of undertaking and further defining the Scope of Practice of the naturopathic profession in Ontario.

The purpose of the project is to help Ontarians in their understanding of the role of NDs in the province, to further help NDs understand the current boundaries of their practice, and to guide the SSRC to more accurately identify and address gaps in the current system to make informed recommendations to Council for future regulatory amendments, including but not limited to access to drugs, lab testing, etc.

Approach

The Scope of Practice statement in the Naturopathy Act, 2007 focuses on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, disorders and dysfunctions (DDDs) to define what the profession can and cannot do. The SSRC has determined that they will undertake a review of the various diseases, disorders and dysfunctions and identify whether they are fully within, partially within, and/or not currently within the scope of practice of naturopathy in Ontario.

The SSRC has created a list of diseases and disorders and dysfunctions. This is a list of as many items that the SSRC has been able to identify and includes diseases, disorders and dysfunctions that are outside the scope, within the scope, and undefined. This list has been placed into broad categories to help organize the information but is not the focus of the consultation.

Feedback

The SSRC is circulating the list publicly to seek feedback about any diseases, disorders or dysfunctions that may be missing from the list. Feedback is sought especially regarding diseases, disorders and dysfunctions that NDs currently see in practice and may be missing from the list.

Next Steps

Following consultation and the finalizing of the list of DDDs, the SSRC intends to begin its review of identifying and further defining the scope of practice of the profession of naturopathy in Ontario.

Consultation Timing

All feedback must be received no later than the end of business day (5:00 p.m.) on March 15, 2022.

Send your Feedback

Any diseases, disorders or dysfunctions that may be missing from the SSRC list should be submitted by March 15, 2022 to Jeremy.quesnelle@collegeofnaturopaths.on.ca
