1. I'm currently a member of the College; what do I need to do to be able to practise IVIT?
There are requirements for the two (2) post-registration Standards of Practice that work in tandem. One, complete the Standard of Practice for IVIT by passing a College-approved course in IVIT and the Ontario IVIT exam. Two, before performing IVIT you must also meet the Standard of Practice for Prescribing by completing the Ontario Prescribing and Therapeutics course and exam. 2. When are IVIT examinations offered?
IVIT examinations are offered twice a year. The list of examination dates, including exam registration deadlines, are posted on the Ontario IVIT Examination Schedule
3. I'm a naturopathic graduate (not currently registered with the College), can I register for the IVIT exam?
No. IVIT, a controlled act, as set out in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991
and the General Regulation, is a post-registration Standard of Practice. Eligibility criteria for sitting the examination includes requirements that exam candidates must be members of the College, holding a General certificate of registration, and be in good standing with the College at the time of the exam.
4. Are there any fees charged by the College that are associated with practising IVIT?
There are no fees for individual members practising IVIT; however, there is an Inspection Program fee which is charged to each premises when an inspection is to be conducted. The $2,500 fee is invoiced to the premises in two payments of $1,250. If there is only one ND performing IVIT at that the premises then that member will incur the cost of the Inspection Program fee. If there is more than one ND performing IVIT at the premises, then it is up to the NDs at that location to determine how they will split the cost of the Inspection Program fee.
5. Do I have to have an inspection before I start to provide IVIT to patients?
If the premises where you intend to perform IVIT procedures (compounding for IVIT or administering by IVIT) is not currently offering IVIT and has not registered the premises with the College, you must first register as a new premises, undergo Part I of the inspection and receive an outcome of a pass or pass with conditions that allows you to begin to perform IVIT procedures.
If the premises is already offering IVIT procedures (an ND has been performing compounding for IVIT or administering by IVIT on site) then you can also provide these services at the premises. However, as a ND authorized to perform IVIT, you should make sure that any premises where you perform IVIT has been registered with the College.
6. Do you recognize IVIT 'certifications' obtained in other jurisdictions? Can I complete a course in BC and sit the Ontario IVIT exam?
No. Due to the differences in scope of practice between the regulated jurisdictions, governing regulation and provincial legislation, Ontario NDs who wish to perform the controlled acts associated with IVIT are required to complete a College approved Ontario-based course in IVIT and the College's IVIT examination (in addition to meeting the Prescribing Standard of Practice). Approved IVIT courses have been vetted by the College to ensure they comply with the training criteria stipulated in the College's IVIT Program and Examinations Policy.
7. Do I need to meet any IVIT Continuing Education requirements to maintain the right to practise IVIT?
Yes. As part of the Quality Assurance Program, every ND has to complete Continuing Education Credits (CECs). Over a three-year period, this includes: 30 credits in Core Activities (pre-approved structured learning related to the clinical competencies within the scope of practice), and 40 credits in Self-Directed Activities (other professional development). Members who have met the Standard of Practice for Prescribing must complete six (6) of those CECs in pharmacology. Members who have met the Standard of Practice for IVIT must complete an additional six (6) IVIT-related CECs within each 3-year reporting cycle.
8. I have met the Standard of Practice for IVIT but want to change my registration status to Inactive; at what point will I be deemed to no longer mee the Standard of Practice for IVIT?
Members of the College are permitted two (2) years of Inactive registration, during which they will still be recognized as having met the two Standards of Practice. Members who exceed this two-year window will no longer be deemed to have met the Standards of Practice and will be required to undergo additional College-approved training and examinations in therapeutic prescribing and IVIT prior to being authorized to administer IVIT.
9. Can I 'inactivate' the Standard of Practice for IVIT without changing my registration status with the College to Inactive?
No. Members holding a General class certificate of Registration with the College, and who have been deemed to have met the Standard of Practice for IVIT are required to maintain requisite insurance coverage in accordance with the College by-laws, comply with CEC requirements related to IVIT and comply with the College's Inspection Program. Members who no longer wish to maintain the Standard of Practice for IVIT may request to relinquish this Standard of Practice by contacting the Examinations department at firstname.lastname@example.org
. All members wishing to relinquish the Standard of Practice for IVIT will be required to sign an Undertaking with the College not to perform the controlled acts associated with the Standard of Practice for IVIT and this information will be reflected on the College's public register.
