It’s National Volunteer Week 2018 and the College simply cannot allow this important moment to pass without recognition of the many volunteers who work with us.

You’ve heard and read the College’s many communications about our mandate – to regulate naturopathy in the public interest. We serve and protect the public. This task would be impossible in today’s regulatory environment without the help of many individuals who selflessly contribute their time, energy and expertise to the College each year.

Over the course of a year, the College will hold over 60 meetings. We will involve nearly 100 volunteers in approximately 360 hours of meetings of different statutory and non-statutory committees such as Patient Relations, Registration, and Discipline/Fitness to Practice, among others. In addition, we have a myriad of individuals who provide us with support as assessors (Quality Assurance, Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Program), examiners, Inspectors, and exam item writers, where they give us full days of work.

In total, I would estimate that over 40,000 hours of volunteer effort go into the regulatory processes for this College alone every year. If that is the average for all 28 health regulatory colleges, health professionals and members of the public provide over 1 million volunteer hours a year in support of health regulation. I say with confidence that this is a very conservative estimate of volunteer hours.

To each and every one of you who volunteer with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario, no matter how large or small a contribution you may feel that you make, we (the Council and the staff) appreciate each and every single one of you for your dedication, commitment and support.  We can’t do this without you!

In celebration of National Volunteer Week 2018, thank you for all that you do!
